ഇളം മണല്‍ മണ്ണ്, സമൃദ്ധമായ എക്കല്‍ മണ്ണ്, കളിമണ്ണ് കലര്‍ന്ന മണ്ണ്, ചെളി നിറഞ്ഞ എക്കല്‍ മണ്ണ് തുടങ്ങി എല്ലാ മണ്ണിലും വഴുതന കൃഷി ചെയ്യാം. എന്നാല്‍ ഏറ്റവും അഭികാമ്യവും, കൂടുതല്‍ വിളവെടുപ്പിനായി ചെളിയും കളിമണ്ണും കലര്‍ന്ന പശിമരാശി മണ്ണാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്, മണ്ണ് നന്നായി വറ്റിച്ചതും ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ഠവുമായിരിക്കണം, കൂടാതെ മണ്ണിന്റെ pH 5.0 മുതല്‍ 6.0 വരെ ആയിരിക്കണം.കാലാവസ്ഥാ സാഹചര്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുകയാണെങ്കില്‍, വഴുതന ചെടി 21 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസ് മുതല്‍ 28 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസ് വരെയുള്ള താപനിലയ്ക്കിടയിലുള്ള മികച്ച വിളവ് നല്‍കുന്നു, എന്നിരുന്നാലും, ഇളം മഞ്ഞ് വീഴാന്‍ സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.ശൈത്യകാലത്തും വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്തും വഴുതന കൃഷി ചെയ്യാം. ശീതകാല വിള എന്ന നിലയില്‍ ജൂണ്‍ മുതല്‍ ജൂലൈ വരെയുള്ള മാസങ്ങളില്‍ വഴുതനങ്ങ വിതയ്ക്കുന്നതാണ് നല്ലത്. ഒരു വേനല്‍ക്കാല വിള എന്ന നിലയില്‍ ഡിസംബറിനും ജനുവരി മാസത്തിനും ഇടയില്‍ വഴുതനങ്ങ വിതയ്ക്കുന്നതാണ് നല്ലത്.ഉയര്‍ത്തിയ കിടക്കകള്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കണം (7-7.5)(1.2-1.5)(10-15). വിത്ത് എഫ്വൈഎം, മണ്ണ് എന്നീ മിശ്രിതം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നന്നായി മൂടണം. കുമിള്‍ രോഗങ്ങള്‍ ഒഴിവാക്കാന്‍, വിത്തുകള്‍ ഒരു കിലോ വിത്തിന് 2 കിലോഗ്രാം എന്ന തോതില്‍ ക്യാപ്ടാന്‍, തിറം എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ചികിത്സിക്കണം. 30,000 മുതല്‍ 45,000 വരെ തൈകള്‍ ഉള്ള ഒരു ഹെക്ടര്‍ സ്ഥലത്ത് 250-375 ഗ്രാം വിത്ത് മതിയാകും. ഏകദേശം 4-5 ആഴ്ചയ്ക്കുള്ളില്‍ തൈകള്‍ പറിച്ചുനടാം.-5 ആഴ്ചയ്ക്കുള്ളില്‍ തൈകള്‍ പറിച്ചുനടാന്‍ പാകമാകും. ജലസേചനം തടഞ്ഞ് തൈകള്‍ കഠിനമാക്കുക. വേരുകള്‍ക്ക് പരിക്കേല്‍ക്കാതെ, തൈകള്‍ ശ്രദ്ധാപൂര്‍വ്വം പിഴുതുമാറ്റുക. ജലസേചനത്തിനു ശേഷം പറിച്ചുനടല്‍ നടത്തണം, അകലം മണ്ണിന്റെ തരത്തെയും അതിന്റെ ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ഠതയെയും ആശ്രയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. പൊതുവേ, (75*75) സെ.മീ അകലത്തില്‍ സൂക്ഷിക്കാം.വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്ത് ആഴ്ചയില്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ നനച്ചാല്‍ മതിയാകും, വഴുതന വിളകള്‍ക്ക് 8-10 ദിവസത്തെ ഇടവേളയില്‍ നനച്ചാല്‍ മതിയാകും.
