ചോളം കൃഷി കേരളത്തിൽ പതിവല്ലെങ്കിലും ഇടയ്ക്ക് ചിലർ ചോളം കൃഷിയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. നമ്മുടെ ഭക്ഷ്യ ധാന്യ വിളകളിൽ ചോളം ഒരു പ്രധാന ഇനം അല്ല എന്നതാണ് കാരണം. എന്നാൽ കേരളത്തില് നല്ല നീര്വാര്ച്ചയുള്ള മണ്ണില് എല്ലാ കാലാവസ്ഥയിലും ചോളം കൃഷിചെയ്യാവുന്നതാണ്.മഴയുള്ള കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ് ഇതിന് അനുയോജ്യം എന്നതിനാൽ ജൂണ് മുതല് ആഗസ്ത്-സെപ്തംബര് വരെ കൃഷി ചെയ്യാവുന്നതാണ്. നല്ല സൂര്യപ്രകാശം ലഭിക്കുന്ന രീതിയിൽ വയലിൽ കൃഷിയിറക്കാം.ചോളത്തില് വിവിധ ഹൈബ്രിഡ് ഇനങ്ങള് ഉണ്ട്. മഴക്കാലത്ത് ഓള്റൗണ്ടര് എന്ന ഇനവും, ഹൈഷല്, പ്രബല് എന്നിവ രണ്ട് കാലാവസ്ഥയിലും, പിനാക്കിള്, 900 എം ഗോള്ഡ് വേനല്ക്കാലത്തും യോജിച്ചതാണ്. ഒരേക്കറില് നടാന് എട്ടു കി.ഗ്രാം വിത്ത് മതി. നിലം നന്നായി ഉഴുത് കട്ട ഉടച്ച് പരുവപ്പെടുത്തിയശേഷം 10 സെന്റിന് ഒരു ടണ് കാലിവളമോ കമ്പോസ്റ്റോ ചേര്ത്തുകൊടുക്കുക.മഴക്കാലത്ത് ചെറിയതറ നീളത്തിലെടുത്ത് അതില് വിത്ത് നടാം. രണ്ടു തറ തമ്മില് രണ്ടടി (60 സെ. മീ.)യും ചെടി തമ്മില് ഒരടി (30 സെ. മീ.)യും അകലത്തില് വിത്ത് നടാം. വിത്തു മുളച്ച് ഒരുമാകുമ്പോള് കള നീക്കം ചെയ്ത് രാസവളം ചേര്ക്കണം. സാധാരണ രീതിയില് ഏക്കറിന് 50 കി.ഗ്രാം യൂറിയ, 25 കി.ഗ്രാം മ്യൂററ്റ് ഓഫ് പൊട്ടാഷ് എന്നിവ നല്കി മണ്ണ് ചേര്ത്തുകൊടുക്കണം.പിന്നീട് രണ്ടുമാസം കഴിഞ്ഞാല് 50 കി.ഗ്രാം പൊട്ടാഷും, പുഷ്ടികുറവാണെങ്കില് 50 കി.ഗ്രാം യൂറിയയും നല്കാം. രോഗങ്ങളില് മഴക്കാലത്ത് ‘കട ചീയല്’ ഉണ്ടാകാം. ഇതു തടയാന് 20 ഗ്രാം സ്യൂഡൊമോണസ് എന്ന ജൈവ കുമിള്നാശിനി (20 ഗ്രാം ഒരുലിറ്റര് വെള്ളത്തില് കലര്ത്തി) ചുവട്ടില് ഒഴിച്ചുകൊടുക്കണം. രാസപദാര്ഥമെങ്കില് ഫൈറ്റലാന് നാലു ഗ്രാം ഒരുലിറ്ററില് തളിക്കുക. തണ്ടുതുരപ്പന് പുഴുവിനെ കാണുന്നുവെങ്കില് വേപ്പെണ്ണ ലായനി തളിച്ചാല് മതി.120 ദിവസംകൊണ്ട് മഴക്കാലത്തും 90-110 ദിവസംകൊണ്ട് വേനലിലും വിളവെടുക്കാം.പുറം തൊലിക്ക് തവിട്ടു നിറമാകുന്നതാണ് പാകമാകുന്നതിന്റെ ലക്ഷണം.അപ്പോൾ ഒടിച്ചെടുത്ത് പാളിയോടെ നാലു ദിവസം വെയിലില് ഉണക്കണം. പിന്നീട് മെതിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യുക. വൃത്തിയാക്കിയ ധാന്യം നാലുദിവസംകൂടി വെയിലില് ഉണക്കി സൂക്ഷിക്കുകയും ഉപയോഗിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യാം. പച്ചക്കറി വിളകളായ തക്കാളി, വഴുതന, മുളക് എന്നിവ യ്ക്കുള്ള വാട്ടരോഗം ഒരുപരിധിവരെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കാന് ഇടയില് ചോളം നട്ടാല് മതിയാകുമെന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.സമ്മിശ്രകർഷകർക്ക് ചോളം കൃഷിയും ഒപ്പം കൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ കഴിയും.
